Remembering the Children on the Titanic

It sends shivers down your spine even thinking about those poor men, women and children who lost their lives that dreadful night. The RMS Titanic set sail from Southampton for New York on the 10th April 1912 with 2,223 people on board. It was the largest passenger ship in the world at the time and was about to set sail for its first and only voyage. Many passengers on board were looking to seek a new life, a new start when they reached New York, others may have been going to find work or a new adventure. Loved ones looking to reunite with families and many people on board the ship were there simply to earn a living. From all walks of life many of these passengers shared the same fate.

Titanic Records

Whilst researching the records on the Titanic I came across the list of the children that died and survived on the Titanic. Many children from all classes lost their lives and some whole families were completely wiped out. However there were many children who were thankfully rescued. One of those children included a young girl called Ruth Elizabeth Becker who was with her mother and her siblings when she boarded the Titanic as 2nd class. She recalled that not long after the ship had hit the Iceburg at 11.40pm on April 14th a steward had said to her mother “We have had a little accident, but we are going to fix it and we will be on our way” Realizing the ship was seriously damaged Nellie (Ruths mother) took her children up to the boat deck.

A steward helped get Richard and Marion in life boat No 11 but would not let Nellie in. Her mother then screamed to Ruth to get into a life boat. Ruth later got into life boat No 13 by sixth officier James Moody. They were all picked up by RMS Carpathia. Although it was a struggle Nellie was reunited with her children again.
